100k is 25% of the way to 1 Million.
I didn't understand this concept-
At first.
But when I did, it completely changed the way I viewed investing.
If we look at it purely from a dollar amount, then obviously 100k is 10% of 1 Million
( $100,000 / $1,000,000 = 10% )
But what if we look at it from a time perspective?
Let's look at an example.
Let's assume we are investing $10k per year, at a 7% interest rate.
At this rate, it would take us 30.73 years to reach $1 Million.
But here's where things get interesting.
It would take us 7.84 years to reach our first 100k.
If it takes us 30.73 years to reach 1 Million and 7.84 years to reach our first 100k...
Then that means that 100k is 25.5% of the way to 1 Million.
( 7.84 / 30.73 = 25.5% )
After the first 100k, the snowball effect really starts to kick in, decreasing the amount of time it takes to reach your next 100k.
In fact, the amount of time it takes to go from 900k to 1 Million is only 1.35 years!
That's almost 6 times faster than it took to get our first 100k!
My personal portfolio is now sitting at around 150k.
My first 100k took a long time to achieve.
But now I understand that thanks to the snowball effect, my money will continue to make me more money.
And this will speed up the time it takes to reach each subsequent 100k.
I used to think I was only 10% of the way to 1 Million when my portfolio was at 100k.
Now I know I'm actually more than 25% of the way to 1 Million.
