One of my favorite things to do is track the investments bought and sold by the some of the greatest investors in the world.
Every quarter, investors with over 100M in assets under management have to file a form 13F, which tells us exactly what moves they have been making in their portfolio.
And recently, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway released their from 13F.
Here are 6 key takeaways from this form:
Real quick, if you missed the news this past week-
All of my spreadsheets can be downloaded on my new site, Tickerdata.com.
Tickerdata ( Tickerdata.com ) is a spreadsheet integration tool that gives you the ability to automatically pull in live stock data for over 70,000 different stocks, 30+ years of historical financial statement data, other key financial metrics, and it can pull in data from over 70+ stock exchanges all across the world, straight into your spreadsheet.
No more copy and pasting for stock data. No more web scraping.
For example, pulling Microsoft's revenue from 2015 into your spreadsheet is now as simple as =Tickerdata( "MSFT", "Revenue", 2015 )
Now, let’s get back to Buffett’s moves…
1. Making Moves.
In Q4 of 2023, Buffett
Added capital to 3 positions
Reduced the size of 3 positions
Sold out entirely of 4 positions
2. Reducing Apple.
Buffett first bought $AAPL in Q1 of 2016, and $AAPL has been Buffett's largest position since Q4 of 2017.
Since then he's added shares far more often than he's sold.
But for the first time since 2018, he sold shares last quarter.
But here's what's interesting:
Last quarter, $AAPL made up 50.04% of his portfolio. Now, $AAPL makes up 50.19% of his portfolio.
So despite selling shares, Buffett's $AAPL position is even larger than last quarter due to-
1. Share price appreciation
2. $AAPL buying back shares
$AAPL remains a massive position for Buffett.
Here’s a chart of when Buffett has bought and sold Apple prior to this release.
3. Bullish on Oil?
The two biggest additions to Buffett's portfolio this quarter were $CVX and $OXY.
$CVX is down 12.41% over the past year.
$OXY is down 13.63% over the past year.
Buy the dip?
4. Buy and Hold forever... or Not.
Buffet bought the homebuilder $DHI in Q2 of 2023.
He completely sold this position in Q4 of 2023.
His total holding time was only around half a year.
To be fair, $DHI is up 46.76% over the past year, so he made a hefty gain on this short term move.
5. Long Financials and Information Technology.
Financials currently make up 24.01% of Buffett's portfolio.
Information Technology currently makes up 51.00% of Buffett's portfolio.
Combined, they make up 75.01% of Buffett's portfolio.
6. Quick Facts.
- Buffett's portfolio is now worth 347 billion, up from 313 billion
- The top 10 holdings make up 92.92% of his portfolio
- Average holding period for the top 10 positions is 31.2 quarters (7.8 years)
- 41 total holdings
That’s all for now.
